DIY: Make Your Own Wish Tree

A few months ago, Kyle and I visited the annual Asian Festival in downtown Columbus. There was a lot of art and quite a few cultural exhibits but my absolute favorite was a Japanese “wish tree.” Traditionally, people would write their wishes on paper and hang or tie them to the branches of a tree.

I didn’t realize until I was browsing online that lots of people make their own wishing trees for weddings and showers.
I decided to make my own tabletop version of the “wish tree” but instead of wishes, I wanted to use lines from my favorite poems. Apparently, I’m not the first person to think of this but we’ll pretend I am.
So I present to you…the poe-tree. I know. My genius knows no bounds.

You can use anything (rocks, beads, sand, gravel) to weigh the foam core and branches down but I used pennies because Kyle has jars full of them and I like the idea of a wish tree surrounded by lucky pennies.

I bought the branches at Michael’s and cut them down with an exact-o knife. I used a piece of foam core at the base of the pot (I found mine in the silk flower arrangement section at Joanne’s). The asymmetrical pot was languishing away on a shelf at the Goodwill.

I used heavy white card stock for the paper and regular white sewing thread to hang it since the color is so unobtrusive.

So there you have it. My homemade poe-tree.
What about you? What have YOU been creating lately?
love, elizabeth
