The Jury Room

Well, day three of jury duty. It’s amazing how quickly you fall into a routine. If nothing else, I’m really enjoying spending time in old downtown.

Yesterday, a few of us ate at a restaurant near the courthouse called The Jury Room. I had the most delicious veggie burger. I’ll probably end up there for lunch again today because it’s so close and the service was great…

List of Winter

I’ll start by telling you where I am right now. Court of Common Pleas, yos. Bam. I’m rockin’ this jury duty thing. And the free wifi? Legit.

I have no idea why I’m talking like that.

But MEANWHILE, I completely stole this idea from Janette over at Janette the Jongleur. A jongleur is a medieval minstrel or jester, in case you were wondering. You can check out her winter to-do list here. I love that her to-do lists are not just serious things like "Pay Bills” and “Go to Post Office” but also fun, festive things. It’s a good reminder for a worry-wart like me that gets so wrapped up in the “priorities” she forgets that enjoying life is a priority, too. Anyway, Janette is awesome and so is her blog.

List of Winter

1. Address and mail Christmas cards

2. Bake these Sweet Wine Cookies from local chef Spencer Budros featured in the Columbus Dispatch this year.

3. Make snow angels

4. Go ice skating

5. Build a snow person

6. Do something totally new for New Year’s

7. Ride the carousel in Columbus Commons

8. Perform a poem at open-mic night

9. Have breakfast at the Starliner Diner

10. Have a black and white movie party

Anyone have any cool winter ideas I should add to my list? What’s on yours? Thanks, Janette, for letting me steal this.

I Am Not A Robot

It has been a long, long ten weeks. And I am exhausted. Tonight as I look around my messy apartment and think of all the things I should be doing…I am choosing to recognize my human-ness and just take a breather.

Which makes me think of this song. Feeling like a robot? I dedicate this song to you.

Tomorrow I have this little thing called jury duty. It’s no big. I’m just gonna go in there and lay some justice down. You know how it is. Also, I’ve been told jurors get free wifi. If this is the case, expect mundo blogging.

What is Monday bringing you?

Rite of Passage: The Day My Blog Became a Woman

Dear sweet blogging community o’ mine, firstly…I have to apologize for my absence. I wrote a week’s worth of posts last weekend and they’ve been posting themselves all week but I have been so swamped with finals and grading and work in the office that I have not had a moment to do much (including eat and sleep). Despite my super lame-ness, many of you have thoughtfully commented and I have loved every single one! Now that my quarter is actually OVER, you can expect many emails/comments/etc. to catch up on all I have missed.

Secondly, it’s time to celebrate because, my friends, officially…today…(choke) my little baby blog became a woman. I checked my email tonight and found (are you ready for this?) my very first…mean comment. OMG, you guys. I thought only super popular, awesome blogs got mean anonymous comments! It was like being tweeted by a famous person. Because who, on the internet is more famous than Mean Anonymous Commenter? He/she/it is seriously everywhere and even though you have no idea what it’s wearing or how it pimps its pad or where it buys those fabulously flattering cyber monikers like “usucksohard92” or “MANPOWER,” Mean Anonymous Commenter definitely has staying power.

And I’m not even going to go into the validity/lack thereof of the succulent little paragraph MAC decided to bestow upon yours truly and her lil’ ol’ blog because really, it’s not the point. We’re not going to stop to ponder how MAC found such an old post (perhaps Googling “women are stoopid”?) We’re not going to question MAC’s motives for the early Christmas gift. We’re not even going to patiently explain the many hiccups in MAC’s logic/reasoning as stated in aforementioned comment. We’re just going to say THANK YOU, Mean Anonymous Commenter. Thank you. Truly. We wear your scorn as it was meant (though surely not intended): as a freaking badge. of. honor.

I took the liberty of drawing up such a badge and I display it here for all to see. Perhaps I shall move it the sidebar where all may enjoy.

Wow. Love is the Adventure is growing up so fast…it seems like just yesterday, she was just an innocent little thing with a readership made up of my mom and my dog. I mean, you all know what’s next! She’s going to want a car and then there’ll be boys…They say you’ve got to give them their wings. Fly, little blog. Fly away. Just stay away from MAC. I know you’ve got a thing for the bad boys but…you can do so much better.

Am I Lonely?

Last week, I read this post by Jennifer over at There is a Season and it reminded me of a strange moment I had over the last holiday weekend. Kyle had gone to work and I was decorating the Christmas tree, alone, in my big fuzzy red slippers, listening to Michael Buble on repeat. I had had plans to spend time with a friend for the evening but she had cancelled at the last minute and as I strung string after string of lights, I began to feel sorry for myself. I imagined how fun it would be to decorate with someone else around. I turned up the music. I made a mental list of all the people in Ohio I could call and ask to hang out. It was a short list. I danced around a little. I imagined Kyle not at work but sitting on the couch telling me how pretty everything looked. I had a conversation with the dog. I moved the Christmas tree three inches to the left. Two inches to the right. And then I blurted the question right out into the stillness of our apartment. The question I had been dreading asking.

"Am I lonely?"

No one answered.

The point of this post isn't really to say that I'm lonely. It's a more of a realization that I haven't been taking stock of my own feelings. I'd been so busy rushing around, filling up the day, I hadn't taken the time to consider what sort of heart-hole I was trying to fill.

What about you? Had any surprising realizations lately?

The Need for Speed

Been seeing this commercial a lot lately. Clever, clever, phone company.

Anyone notice the almost manic pressure the world feels to speed things up? A 3G network?? Are you living in the DARK AGES??? That page took an entire SECOND to download? Your phone is CRAP. Seriously?

Like Louis C.K. says about the iPhone's internet capabilities, "Give it a second! It's going to SPACE. Can you give it a second?"

In a world where we have essentially all recorded data/information/people/things at our fingertips, we seem to have forgotten the part where it's fun to explore and discover and take the time to enjoy the journey.

I am promising all of you right now that I am going to relish the time. I am going to savor the long line at the grocery store. I am going to take in deep, beautiful lung-fuls of air while Madigan takes forever to find a suitable patch of grass on which to pee. I am going to slow. down. now.

Zombie Love Song

A love song for your day...Kyle and I sing this one to each other all the time. "If my heart was still beating, it would beat for you..."

"Yeah, I'm a zombie, baby. Ain't nobody perfect!"
What song is making you smile lately?

PS: My finals are just about over and then I should be back to my regular, (hopefully) more interesting posts AND to reading and commenting on my many favorite blogs!
