Vacation Day Three: My Dream House

I have never been to heaven so I can’t exactly verify this but…I have it on good authority that it looks a lot like the Outerbanks. If you’ve never been, I want you to drop whatever you’re doing right now, get in your car, and head east. Or west. Or…whatever direction gets you closer to Cape Hatteras because it literally might be my favorite place in the entire universe. What am I saying?? Uh, forget about Hatteras. It’s mine. GO AWAY. When Kyle and I move there, we will live in a house that looks like this.

Saturday19

And I will do nothing but float around in gauzy white linen with a glass of chardonnay in my hand and voice-over narrate my life story with a Fray song playing in the background. It will be a simpler life.

Saturday18

Please just appreciate this sign with me. I kept looking for Richard Gere.

Saturday7

The tallest lighthouse in North America. Bam.

Ladies and gentlemen…my brother, the American Eagle model.

Mom and Ben practically had to carry me off the OBX (oh yeah, I call it the OBX now. Because I’m cool like that). I am not even a little bit kidding when I say that I looked up available rentals for about half an hour before I remembered that I have to finish graduate school in Ohio. So…way to squash THAT dream, universe.

Where would you live if you could live anywhere?

Vacation Day Two: At Ease, Marine

So day two of the trip, we drove from Wilmington to Jacksonville where my brother is stationed. But not without our morning coffee…

Friday1

Ben has been deployed for the last year and I have missed him so, so much. So nice to see him back on U.S. soil.

Friday2

The day was particularly special because it was Mom’s birthday. Look how pretty she is…

Friday2

After a few excruciating hours at the DMV switching titles and registration for Benjamin’s car, we took a local recommendation for a little Caribbean restaurant called Elsa’s.

Newsletter

The food was saltier than I’m used to but I loved all the fresh vegetables and rice!

Friday8

Ben escorted us on base and we got a peek inside his barracks. I realize Marines are pretty much required to be neat and orderly but it was still a shock to see his room so clean. He played and sang a few songs for us, too, and it made me pretty nostalgic for our childhood. Sometimes I just stare at him and can’t believe how grown up he is.

Friday5

But then I see his dirty combat boots and I remember that not only is he an adult now but he’s in a dangerous and demanding line of work. Not going to lie…I got a little choked up when I saw these.

Friday3

And his dress cover which I think is just so pretty. He rolled his eyes at me but I got him to put it on for about thirty seconds that afternoon.

Friday6

It was about a four hour drive to Cape Hatteras that night but soooo worth it. Can’t wait to show you THOSE pictures on Monday!

If you have siblings, are you ever just blown away by their talents and abilities? Ben never ceases to amaze me.

Vacation, Day One

So since the main purpose of this vacation was really to drive my brother’s car to North Carolina, we spent the majority of last Thursday doing exactly that. Anyone who reads this blog regularly knows I am obsessed with road trips. They’re on my list of most awesome things about being alive. But I’m one of those annoying people that wants to stop at every historical marker or oddball museum to take a picture. Call it a by-product of being homeschooled for 11 years. Everything is a field trip. Fortunately, I got this quality from my mom so she wasn’t too terribly annoyed that I wanted to field trip our way through a few states. Before we left Columbus, I’d visited my favorite travel website, Roadside America, aka: “Your Online Guide to Offbeat Tourist Attractions.”

Roadside is great because I can always count on them to recommend some sightseeing just a little (or a lot) on the side of weird. And that’s where Körner's Folly comes in. This is a destination I’d had my eye on since last March when we drove to North Carolina.

Sometimes billed as the “strangest house in the world,” Körner's Folly was built essentially as a model home by interior designer Jule Körner. As a result, none of the rooms or doors are the same size or style. Because Jule’s wife was so in love with the house, they eventually remodeled and extended the home. It’s now a walk-through museum. Some of the rooms are tiny and the doorways can be difficult to get through but it was well-worth getting side-tracked from the main highway.

Walking up the path to the house…

Thursday11

It felt like there were mirrors in every single room in the house. It got a little horror-movie creepy after awhile.

Thursday10Thursday9Thursday6

More mirrors and doors and stairways…the middle photo is of Körner's design and it’s called a “kissing corner.” It was for engaged and married couples who wanted to sneak away during a party or reception and spend some time alone. I thought this was especially sweet.

Thursday2

In the children’s nursery, the ceiling is only 5’ 6” high as Mom is demonstrating.

Thursday12

The other significant thing about the house is that it holds the first domestic theatre (stage in a private home) built in the United States. The little theatre was used for the Körner's children and other local kids to put on theatrical productions for the community.

Thursday3

Fortunately, no one else was in the museum so I could get away with stuff like this.

Thursday4
Thursday5

And they say a PhD in theatre is an impractical degree…

So there you have it. Körner's Folly. If you’re ever in Kernersville, North Carolina, be sure to stop and see it. This fulfills something on my bucket list for 2012.

What about you? What’s the weirdest museum you’ve ever visited?

Your Mother Should Know

My mom and I are in North Carolina for the next few days to see my brother who just got back from a year-long deployment. I am documenting every microscopic moment of our vacation and I can’t wait to share with all of you!

Today is extra special because it’s my mom’s birthday!

MomBirthday2

I snapped a few pictures of us yesterday and these are just a few of my favorites…

Thursday2

Mom was so patient with me on our eleven-hour drive yesterday. She even tolerated my road trip mix which included me serenading with her this song in honor of her birthday.

I even did the dance. It was magical.

Happy birthday, Mama! I’m so excited to spend the day with you!

How to Pack a Suitcase

Not to brag or anything (I am totally about to brag), but I pack a lean, mean suitcase. This trip poses a unique challenge because I am driving to North Carolina but flying home so while I have plenty of room for the road trip, everything I pack has to pass muster at the airport, too. I’ll keep a few things out for my handbag like road maps, GPS, camera and charger, iPod, my trusty Sperry’s and some snacks. Other than that, everything is here! Check it out…

I invested in a buckle-style luggage strap to secure my vintage suitcase, in lieu of a lock. Mine is from Target but you can find them lots of places, including this cute handmade one I spotted on Etsy.

What are your best tips for packing light?

Adventure on the Road: Part One

"Why think about that when all the golden land's ahead of you and all kinds of unforeseen events wait lurking to surprise you and make you glad you're alive to see?"
- Jack Kerouac, On the Road
On Friday morning, Kyle, Madigan and I will be piling into the Subaru and driving to North Carolina to say good-bye to my brother who is deploying next week.

Since this happens to coincide with my last spring break as a master's student, we thought we would go ahead and make this a real vacation!

We've been plotting out some fun stops using one of my favorite websites: Roadside America. Check them out for all kinds of bizarre museums, landmarks, and strange sights along the highway!

Here's a map of our route from Columbus, Ohio to Wilmington, North Carolina… View Spring Road Trip 2011 in a larger map

We'll be tweeting from the road so be sure to follow us to get hourly updates on sights and sounds from the Appalachian Highway! Just click on the Follow Us link on the right top of the page. And keep checking back for trip updates.
