My office on campus

You guys, it's like the 21st century in here. Today I am blogging for the first time on my beautiful new iPad. I'm still waiting for the novelty of the touch screen to go away but I get it now. I totally get how someone could get sucked into the Internet by way of Apple technology. This is the view from my window. The theater looks out over the Olentangy River. I think we're pretty spoiled to have a window to the outside world and I'm looking forward to watching the seasons change from up here.

And thanks to Steve Jobs I can show you my office with the camera. The one built into my iPad! Dudes, my minds is blown right now.

So here's my office. I share it with other people but this is my little corner of solace at school. That's Gonga on the desk. He belonged to my mom when she was in the Navy and now he's my little reminder of home. He spends most of his time watching over my pencils.

It's Friday and that means my office hours are almost up and then I'll be heading out for a drink with some of my friends. What does Friday mean for you?

Coffee

Coffee

I think my husband is kind of like coffee. Kyle tells me that being a barista is like being a bartender with coffee and I totally get that. And I think he is the best barista anyone could ask for because he really loves his customers. He remembers their names and their favorite orders and he really wants to know about their days, about their families, and their lives. He loves to come home and tell me the craziest stories about the people he meets all day long. “People aren’t paying $4 for just a cup of coffee,” he tells me. “They can get that at home. People want to come to a coffee house to feel like someone cares about them, like they have a community, a place to go.” He’s right. I think people are really lonely for each other. And when he comes home at night and I get to bury my nose in the collar of his shirt, I can smell the coffee. So now whenever I smell coffee, I think about Kyle. Sometimes when he’s not home, I sniff his work shirts. (Do NOT tell him.) Kyle is kind of like coffee to me. He’s calm and wise but he’s also warm and gets my heart racing. He smells good and makes me feel safe and reminds me of home. You guys…I really love coffee.

Tea Party

It’s finals week and that means much caffeine and little sleep (and a whole lot of teeth grinding – my jaw has been popping all day from the stress). But God gives us solace in the little, quiet spaces between things. And this was mine today.

the library of congress is going to be so mad…

First of all, I just wanted to say THANK YOU to all the wonderful bloggers who have been participating in the blog hop so far! If you haven’t linked up yet, it’s still open (and an awesome way to discover new blogs!) If you’re brand new to Love is the Adventure, thanks so much for being here. If you’ve recently followed and/or commented, I am so glad to hear from you. I’ll be returning the favor soon and visiting each of your blogs so look for me!

Here’s what last night looked like at our house…because when I’m feeling stressed and anxious, I find myself eating more carbs and watching more Buffy the Vampire Slayer and…alphabetizing my books. What? It’s soothing. And stuff.

ABC2

But then it gets complicated. Do you alphabetize by author or by title? And if you alphabetize fiction by author, do you want to do the same thing with non-fiction, even if you can’t remember who wrote the biography of Zelda Fitzgerald? And speaking of non-fiction, do you create sub-categories for essays and biographies or do you just lump everything together?

ABC1

And then the theatre books…which seems to grow by an entire shelf every year closer I get to my PhD. Did you know there’s a difference between drama and theatre? In this case, “drama” refers to dramatic literature (plays) and theatre refers to performance production. Also, what do you do about plays without anonymous authors like Everyman?

ABC3

And my very favorite section, reserved for my favorite topic…popular entertainment (circus, sideshows, burlesque, vaudeville, etc.) which is what I’m hoping to write my dissertation about! But do I separate by topic or historical period or color?

ABC4

ABC9

I ended up with ten categories: poetry, fiction, non-fiction, women’s studies, drama, dramatic anthologies, theatre history, theatre practice (acting, directing, and technical), dramatic theory, and popular entertainment.

ABC7

So now you know what I do on Tuesday nights when I can’t sleep. Books are so comforting to me. So is order.

What about you? What do you find comforting when you’re anxious?

Comfort

Tonight I’m facing a bout of insomnia. Naturally, I decided to get out of bed and blog about it.

There’s something about the approaching autumn that makes me a little melancholy, a touch

homesick. I miss Colorado. I miss my family. My mom, especially. I haven’t lived with my parents in

nearly seven years but there’s just nothing like the beginning of fall to make me feel like a little girl

again.

In a sudden need for comfort, I have brewed a cup of caramel cream tea from one of my favorite

places, The Deep Steep Tea Company in Steamboat Springs (my amazing mother-in-law was

sweet enough to send me a few bags).

I do love the fall…the promise of cooler weather and crunchy leaves and cozy sweaters and tart

apples…kettle corn and school supplies…in a fit of end-of-summer cabin fever, I went into a frenzy

and completely rearranged all the furniture in our apartment (pictures still to come, I promise). I

moved all of our bookcases out of the office and into the living room so that I can have them near me

more often. I find them comforting, familiar, and friendly…

What about you? What little things do you find comforting? And what are you doing to prepare for fall?

love from your friendly neighborhood sleepyhead,

elizabeth
