Breakfast Tea

I got to spend this morning with one of my favorite people. I haven’t told her this but Chelsea is kinda my grad-school inspiration. She manages to be both totally accomplished as a scholar and dynamic as a teacher, but also fun and passionate and hilarious and she never makes you feel dumb for not knowing something. She just has this way of making the obscure and erudite completely cool and accessible. And I love her.

One of my bucket list items for 2012 was to visit at least five places featured in the book Breakfast with Nick, written by breakfast blogger, Nick Dekker, which is about all the amazing places to have breakfast in Columbus. So today we went to the Cambridge Tea House and it was just as lovely as I imagined it would be. The scones were perfect and the tea was just right. If you live in Columbus and haven’t been yet, I totally recommend it.

I also got to hear some of Chelsea’s dissertation research about 18th-century actresses that seriously had me on the edge of my seat. I will not be even a little shocked when all of this gets turned into an HBO mini-series.

Have you been anywhere new lately?

5 TV Women I Would Totally Be Friends With

1. Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation

Favorite quotes:

"Ma'am, next time we speak...we shall be dancing on the grave of a possum.”

"You're like a man-genius with a taut, narrow frame, like a sexy elf king."

2. Dinah Laurel Lance from Arrow.

Pros of being friends with Laurel Lance: She’s a lawyer so if you ever get in legal trouble, she’d be handy. Also, she’s politically active and cares about the disenfranchised so she would motivate you to stay true to your personal convictions and remind you of who you really are. Plus, she has really cute clothes.

Cons of being friends with Laurel Lance: I feel like hanging around Laurel would probably increase your chances of being kidnapped by a corrupt kingpin and held for ransom or dangled off a building or something.

3. Jessica Day from New Girl

Favorite quotes: “I mean you're like aging ballerina, child chess prodigy, professional magician crazy.”

“I like moving slow. I like being weird and taking my time. I'm not like you. I don't just jump in the potato sack with the first potato that I meet with diabetes!”

4. Olivia Benson from Law and Order: SVU

Favorite quotes: “You did the one thing you're supposed to do when somebody threatens you; survive.”

Fin: “Who's side are you on?”
Benson: “The victim's. Which is where we should be.”

5. Rayna James from Nashville

Pros: Famous and talented. Older than me and would probably give great advice, especially about things I’ll probably be dealing with in the next few years, like motherhood. Good taste in music.

Cons: Busy, has a lot of political problems, is really stressed out, complicated past with ex-boyfriend/bandmate.

Explorers Club

I’ve talked about Melissa on the blog before but I may have forgotten to mention how absolutely sad I am now that she has moved to South Carolina to be a big grown-up animal doctor (booooooooooooooooooo) instead of staying here in Columbus with me. So when she told me she was thinking about coming up for Labor Day weekend, I got super-joyous. And then she did. And now she’s here! Since our time together is limited…we are taking full advantage and doing every awesome thing we can think of. Starting with breakfast.

I had never been to the Explorers Club in Merion Village but I am so glad Melissa knew about it because it is the coolest, out-of-the-way little place. The service was wonderful and the food was perfect.

Their vegetarian menu is AWESOME and they were able to substitute tofu for scrambled eggs. So good.

This is Melissa’s I’m-Sad-I-Live-in-South-Carolina-And-Not-Here face.

I am not even going to think about how sad I’m going to be in two days when she has to go home.

Happy Labor Day weekend!

Lunch Date

When you’ve seen another person through some of the best and worst days of their life, the conversation seems to move from the present to the past and back without much effort. When Beth and I were talking over coffee yesterday, we started reminiscing about college, some of the good stuff, and some of the painful stuff, too. We laughed about things and then were surprised that we could laugh.

"Wow,” Beth said and smiled that smile she remembers something, “That’s the gift of time, I guess.”

And that just really stayed with me for the rest of the day and for the drive of home. Time is a gift. It helps us let go and it helps us hold on. And it made me realize that, when it comes to my friendship with Beth, no one makes me laugh like Beth, no one is quiet with me like Beth, no one else can do Gossip Girl impressions with me like Beth, no one understands me like Beth, and the most important thing she has ever given me is her time.

Living hours away from my best friend who, like me, has been in graduate school for the last three years means that when we both find time to sneak away and hang out for a few hours, we leap. So yesterday, we met in Cincinnati for lunch at Findlay’s Market. Findlay’s is the oldest public market in Ohio and reminds me a lot of North Market in Columbus. There were so many amazing building murals and great doorways to photograph so Beth had to put up with a bajillion pictures (the perils of hanging around a blogger).

So talk to me about the gift of time in your life. What has time allowed you to do, overcome, or become?

we are travelers together

I spent the first half of yesterday in airports and on airplanes on my way to Colorado. I kind of love airports. There’s just something unspoken-ly great about a place designed totally the passing-through. The airport feels like a portal.

There’s something else I’ve inherited from my mom (besides her incredible good looks and sense of humor). The ability to talk to strangers.

Yesterday, I met Joe.

Joe
Joe is 80 years-old and a Korean War veteran who served on an aircraft carrier in the Navy for three years. While on board ship, he survived a typhoon but told me he only got seasick once. His wife was a professional exhibition and ballroom dancer who performed at famous supper clubs in the 1960’s (places like the exclusive Friars Club in New York City) and he tells me with great pride, that she was “the prettiest girl in town” and that they had danced together in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. “I’m not much of a partier anymore,” he laughs, “But I do love to ballroom dance.” Joe was a dance teacher, and later an EMT. One of his good friends wrote songs for country star Tammy Wynette. He has two daughters in California. And these days, he tries to keep doing new things. He’s learning how to play the piano and reading a biography on Charles Lindbergh. “I’m a jack of all trades and a master of none,” he tells me. When we get off the plane in Denver, I ask if I can take his picture and he says, “Sure.”

“I hope you have a good time with your family,” he tells me as I walk away.

“Safe travels,” I say.

“You’re a sweet girl.”

You never know who you’re traveling with…
Who’s the most interesting person you’ve met on a trip?

If you're brand new to Love is the adventure...

Hi, I'm Elizabeth! Here's a little bit more about me...

Thought it was a perfect time to share pictures from the Clippers game last night. It was our first time visiting Huntingon Park here in downtown Columbus and we are seriously crushing on this ballpark. The Clippers are the Triple A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians and it was fun to see a game on a smaller field. Just a ton of charm about this venue and the staff was awesome.  The rain even held off until the bottom of the 9th.

Celebrities I Would Totally Be Friends With

Ah, celebrities. That weirdly enigmatic, shockingly influential, yet absurdly tiny demographic of humans with mystical powers. The ability to make weird, ugly clothes appear hip and effortless, to make even the most mundane of tasks somehow fascinating… I know I sometimes stare at pictures in People and think, OMG, look, Angelina Jolie totally takes out the trash just like a normal person. OMG, I’m a normal person. It’s almost like Angelina Jolie could be my next-door neighbor because really, we’re both just two normal human beings. But then I have to ask myself, would it really be so rad to live next door to a celebrity? Would I actually really want to be friends with any of the people I watch on television or read about in Elle? Really? Are there famous people that I think might make really good friends? Yes. Yes, there are.

1. Emily Deschanel. Really funny and kind, seems to listen well, acts completely normal and fun in interviews, balances her new baby and career (something I aspire to), and just happens to play one of my favorite characters on television. Ever. I love that she has no problem looking silly or being vulnerable.

2. Michelle Obama. I just feel like she’s a woman that I could learn a great deal from. She’s so well-educated and poised and she has that inexplicable quality of all great first ladies, absolute grace under pressure. I love her passion for getting children and families physically active, her commitment to her daughters and the way she is able to both support her husband and hold him accountable, her amazing sense of humor and fun, and her classic sense of style. For me, she is the quintessential American woman.

3. Jon Stewart. Well-read, intelligent, thoughtful. We have similar politics but, like I want to be, I think Jon tries to really listen to opposing points of view and find value everywhere he looks. Also, he’s had the chance to interview some of the most influential leaders and writers of the 21st century and I think he would be really interesting. I Iove that he’s a family man. Also, a true New Yorker. The kind of friend I’d want to take me to see the Statue of Liberty.

4. Ryan Gosling. Okay, no one that reads my blog should be surprised. We all know that Ryan Gosling is already my platonic movie-husband. The truth is, though…I just think Ryan is great friend material, period. He’s very thoughtful and has a lot of humility. He has a heart for others and uses his celebrity for the Enough Project, an organization working to help end genocide in Uganda and the Congo. You can watch a video about that here. He doesn’t seem to let what others think change who he is. He loves his mom so much that he takes her as his date to almost everything (including the Oscars). He has a band. He wears footie pajamas. He respects women. He’s obsessed with his dog. Also, Kyle and I want to name our son Ryan so I appreciate that R.G. is living up to the name we have picked out for our future child by being, in general, so awesome.

5. Trey Parker and Matt Stone. I realize that Trey and Matt are not one person but I would really like to be friends with both of them. Simultaneously. And I would like to be around to watch them play off each other or come up with a new episode. Or just do Kyle and Cartman’s voices for half an hour. Whatever. Also, Trey and Matt are from Colorado which practically makes us best friends already. Because our souls are all Rocky Mountain sympatico and stuff.

What about you? Is there a famous person you’d actually want to be FRIENDS with?
