Madigan is a Snow Puppy

Whoever was dreaming of a white Christmas was obviously not inhabiting the two and a half feet directly above the ground. Seriously. Look at my fur. I was absolutely pristine this morning. Now I am wet and cold and angry. Is this fun for you?

A Weekend with Kate

Kate flew out from San Diego last weekend to see me and I wanted to share some of my pictures. She decided by the end of the weekend that anyone who enters my apartment should be required to sign a photography waiver. But she was a great sport about it and let me take about a gajillion pictures of her! Here are a few of my favorites…

Kate1

Kate hadn’t had real snow in the past two years because she spends most of her time in sunny San Diego. Don’t you feel bad for her? Actually, you should probably feel bad for her. I made her stand outside for a long time while I snapped these.

Isn’t she beautiful?

Kate

When Kate and I were in middle school and high school, we were in a girls’ ensemble choir at church. Our wonderful director (and growing up, our second mom), Tammy, lives here in Ohio now. On Sunday afternoon, we dragged her out to the Franklin Park Conservatory with us to see the beautiful orchids, but mostly just to talk her ear off…so fun. I can’t even tell you how many of my high school memories revolve around choir sleepovers at Miss Tammy’s!

And one of me…to prove I was actually there…

Me

I actually took a whole big bunch at the conservatory and I’ll post some of those tomorrow! Tammy and I are both pretty hardcore shutterbugs and poor Kate had to follow us around for an hour or so but I think she had fun, anyway.

Thank you, thank you, Kate for flying all the way to little old Columbus for me and thank you, Tammy, for coming out in the cold February afternoon with us!

Celebrate Everything

What would my daily life be like if I intentionally celebrated not just the big stuff but the little stuff, too? Sometimes I think I get so wrapped up in the big picture goals that I forget about all the little baby successes I had along the way. So I’m trying something new…

This week I am celebrating…

1. Seeing “Doctor of Philosophy” for the first time below my name on the graduate student photo directory in the lobby. I’m not a PhD yet but seeing those words reminded me how excited I am to be a day closer to my degree.

2. Eating right. I just got back from my Weight Watchers meeting and I lost four pounds!

3. The first real snow in Columbus. It may only have been an inch or so but it was a glorious powdery delight to me and Madigan.

I think I’m going to try to do this every week. What about you? What little (and big) successes can you celebrate this week?

List of Winter

I’ll start by telling you where I am right now. Court of Common Pleas, yos. Bam. I’m rockin’ this jury duty thing. And the free wifi? Legit.

I have no idea why I’m talking like that.

But MEANWHILE, I completely stole this idea from Janette over at Janette the Jongleur. A jongleur is a medieval minstrel or jester, in case you were wondering. You can check out her winter to-do list here. I love that her to-do lists are not just serious things like "Pay Bills” and “Go to Post Office” but also fun, festive things. It’s a good reminder for a worry-wart like me that gets so wrapped up in the “priorities” she forgets that enjoying life is a priority, too. Anyway, Janette is awesome and so is her blog.

List of Winter

1. Address and mail Christmas cards

2. Bake these Sweet Wine Cookies from local chef Spencer Budros featured in the Columbus Dispatch this year.

3. Make snow angels

4. Go ice skating

5. Build a snow person

6. Do something totally new for New Year’s

7. Ride the carousel in Columbus Commons

8. Perform a poem at open-mic night

9. Have breakfast at the Starliner Diner

10. Have a black and white movie party

Anyone have any cool winter ideas I should add to my list? What’s on yours? Thanks, Janette, for letting me steal this.

Let it…drizzle?

The weather here hasn’t exactly inspired visions of sugar plums in my head. It’s kind of just been blahblah drizzly fall. Which I will probably be longing for come February in Ohio. But with the tree and the lights and the Christmas carols blaring…I guess I was just hoping for a little snowflake. I was thinking this December might be a bust until I saw THIS.

Weather

Now THAT’S what I’m talking about. Bring it on, December.

Oh, and if you haven’t stopped over to enter Ashley’s adorable holiday giveaway at A Recipe for Sanity, you need to go there right now!
