On my nightstand

I can’t be the only person that does this. I start about eight different books and so it takes me like…months to get anything read because I just obstinately refuse to focus on one thing at a time. I thought I’d share what’s been on my nightstand recently. Don’t laugh.

BlogStand1

Allow me to justify. Bottom to top: Melodramatic Formations is for my course on 19th century popular entertainment. Trauma Stewardship was a gift from the staff of the rape crisis center where I volunteer and I’m trying to use it more in my day-to-day life. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is totally creepy and was my Christmas book from Kyle (spoiler alert: as books go, it’s not so Christmas-y). The Night They Raided Minsky’s is part of my research on burlesque star Rose La Rose. The House at Riverton was a gift from my dad and is super Daphne Du Maurier-ish. Flapper is an excellent non-fiction examination of the history of flapper girls through the lens of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. Three to Get Deadly is delicious mystery-novel garbage but Stephanie Plum is a bounty hunter in Trenton, New Jersey, okay? and I love her. And The Catcher in the Rye is just there in case I need Holden to make me feel better.

Bonus: Kyle’s nightstand. He’s a little more disciplined than I am, hence the shorter stack…

What about you? What’s on your nightstand right now? Are you a one-at-a-time reader or do you like to jump around as the mood suits you?

I am such an old lady…

I was in Barnes and Noble a couple days ago exchanging a book I had purchased and the following conversation occurred…

Sales associate: You know, if you had a Nook, you could just do this online. It would be super convenient!

Me: Oh, I know. But I will never own an e-reader. I will cling to the printed page until the day that I die (Yes. I literally said this).

SA: Well…okay…I mean, IF there are still bookstores around then.
Me: (gritting my teeth) There will be.

SA: I don’t know…lots and lots of bookstores are going out of business.

Me: (a little louder than necessary) There will always be books.

SA: Well, Half-Price Books will be probably still be around.

Me: (trying not to shoot lasers into this woman’s head with my eyeballs) If it’s just me, stock-piling books in my basement, there will still be books.

SA: That’s so funny. It’s usually not the younger ones that say that – it’s usually the older people!

Me: …..

Okay. So I think she just called me an old-fashioned stick-in-the-mud fuddy-duddy. Which is fine. I mean, I’m mostly an eighty-five year-old lady trapped in the body of a twenty-four year-old. I’m aware.

But I think I’m pretty hip. Pretty with it. Pretty down with the kidz. I mean, I listen to my iPod. I use a cell phone. I have a Facebook profile and a Twitter. I have a BLOG, okay? But I just…I just can’t get behind this.

PandPnook    is not the same as PandP

Honestly, if I didn’t think one was going to try and eradicate the other, I wouldn’t be so annoyed.

I do not think ill of the many, many Nook and Kindle readers of the world. Some of you I even call my friends and my family. I do not begrudge you your life choice. You have your free downloadable classics and your lower book costs and smaller carbon footprint and compact library and chic e-Reader covers. Get on with your bad selves! Not that you needed my permission.

I’ll just be over dog-earing pages and bending book spines and writing notes in the margins. Oh, yeah, and if I spill my coffee? My book probably won’t die.

Here’s what I’m reading now. I love Ree Drummond. If I had been born with an older sister around, this is what I imagine she would be like. Her love story, though…sigh. A city girl and a rancher. So good. Oh, yeah, and I'm aware of the irony of insisting on a printed book written by a blogger.

More of This

Instead of television, which I have given up in case you missed this post, I want to...

Do more of this...

(Maybe I won't always wear heels but hey, gotta look good for the books.)

And this...

Hopefully some of this...

(Both the cooking and the making out with my husband part. Yeah.)

And finally...

What about you? What kinds of things occupy your not-plugged-in time?

5 Books I Want to Read Instead of Futurist Manifestos

Still battling a head cold that’s creeping slowly into my lungs. Being sick sucks but I’m using it as an excuse to eat a cheeseburger and go to bed early. I’m pretty sure that’s allowed.

Not that I have time to read any of these right now…but hey, a girl can dream…

What about you? What’s on your reading list?

Starving Artist

Creative people have heard the cliché. The truth is, being an artist of any kind makes earning a living wage difficult, hence the whole…starving thing.

But what I think we forget is that young artists are sometimes starving for other things like encouragement…response…hope… We love art in all its shapes and sizes and for all the ways it enriches our lives. I wonder, though, if all the artists I loved and admired had felt so discouraged that they gave up, how much would be missing from my life?

I’m one of those people who is fortunate enough to be surrounded by creative, hard-working people all the time. I think I take that for granted. So in the spirit of loving artistry and craft and creativity, I’m starting something new called Starving Artist. It’s a bi-monthly post featuring a new, young artist and their work. It could be in any creative field…music, dance, performance, film, visual art, writing, design, craft…

To kick things off, I’d like to recommend Emily Jeziorski’s historical romance…

Mack & Moira

When Mackenzie Cruz makes an unbelievable discovery in the turn-of-the-century New York home she’s just purchased, she is plunged into a world long gone, a world of swishing skirts and fast-talking working men and boarding school secrets and a love story that was never supposed to happen…

Moira stood, rooted in place for one long moment before she caught Jack’s lips curving up into another grin. She smacked him across the face; her hand stinging as it made contact with his cheek.

“Oy!” Jack cried, rubbing his face. “What the hell is dat for?”

“How dare you!” she exclaimed, feeling the blush rise up her neck. “Of all of the rude, uncouth…”

It was Maxine’s turn to intervene as the carriage pulled up. “It’s been a gas, fellas,” she said grabbing Moira’s hand and giving a swift tug, “but as we were saying, it’s time to call it a night. Long ride back to…” she looked at Samantha and Caroline who shrugged, unable to supply another borough’s name, “wherever we’re going.”

It’s exciting, sweeping, and really, really funny…and you can follow the whole story by visiting Emily’s website here. I couldn’t stop reading and I think you’ll love it, too…If you do, be sure to email her or leave a comment of encouragement/reaction for her here! This is a great chance to watch an amazing novel from its beginnings…

Would you like to be a featured Starving Artist?

Are you a songwriter? A poet? A graphic novel illustrator? A fashion designer? A filmmaker? A photographer? Are you an Etsy artisan? The list goes on and on…

If you’d like to be featured here, please send me an email at loveisadventure@gmail.com. I’d love to post your video or painting or poetry or a sample of any other kind of media you might like to share. Maybe this is an opportunity for some exposure or a chance to meet a potential new audience or just get some encouragement/love from other creative people!

Because really…aren’t we all starving for something just a little, wanting someone to love what we create, what we put our hearts into?

Wishing you a creative Wednesday…

Celebrate Everything

Continuing my commitment to celebrate the little things, here’s my weekly celebration list:

1. A cup of tea with my friend Rosie. We had the loveliest conversation.

2. Losing 3.2 pounds this week.

3. A spontaneous date with my husband. I didn’t even realize how much I was craving his undivided attention and advice.

4. Starting the compilation of my candidacy exam reading list. This may sound silly – celebrating a list I haven’t even finished writing (let alone reading) but this one was weighing on my mind and just getting started makes it seem less scary.

5. The Yellow Sale at Bath and Body Works where stuff in the store is up to 75% off. This is a trivial one but I scored some really happy-scented lotion and some cozy candles. Smell is a big one for me, especially in the winter time. My new favorite? Strawberry Sparkler. (Girls, the travel-size is $1.25 online right now…just saying…)

Well, there we go. Operation: Celebrate Everything continues…

What about you? What are you celebrating this week?
