Lessons from Date Night

DateNight

My husband never stops amazing me. Just when I think he’s wooed all he can woo, he goes and woos me just a wee bit more. (See what I did there?) I learn a lot on our date nights. Here’s some stuff I thought about last night…

1. Dating isn’t a price tag; it’s an attitude. Who made up the rule that going out had to be so expensive? Pack a picnic and get outside. Check out local papers for community events like free concerts, art gallery nights, or theatre in the park. Go to a nice restaurant and split a large appetizer or dessert. See if your credit or debit card rewards can be applied towards free movie or concert tickets. Order take-out and make up your own rules to an old board game. Find out if any of the museums or zoos in your city have community appreciation days with discounted or free tickets. Hit up an arcade or roller rink.

2. There’s nothing sexier than the silence between two people who have been together long enough to hear all the stuff that cozy silence can say.

3. I don’t know everything about my husband yet and that’s awesome. Kyle and I play a game when we’re out together, cleverly called, ‘What don’t I know about you?’ in which we (surprise!) try to find out what we don’t know about each other. Last night, I found out that Kyle ran track for a year in high school. I can’t believe I didn’t know that!

4. Sometimes I try to imagine that we’re on our first or second date again. It’s like learning to flirt all over again.

Now I want to know…what are your best date night tips (for dating singles, for long-term partners, for anybody!)?

love, elizabeth

That's so sweet!! I think just doing something we both enjoy brings us closer together!!! My sister who
Has been with her husband going on 25 years always says she is learning about him so it's just like education...life long learning is a must!!

I love the bit about silence. I remember remarking to my Kyle a while ago that's it's a real sign of comfort and progress in a relationship when there's no such thing as an awkward silence anymore. Just...at ease.

I love your thoughts about some cheap date nights - those are great!

Maybe this sounds silly, but I try to think of things in advance before we go out that I want to talk about. Nothing that would bring about conflict, just things I want to talk about and having a date creates the space to have some good discussions about things. I guess I just really enjoy good conversation!

I think this is really sweet, as well. And I also like the part about silence. Too bad I don't have a significant other to do these things with! #singlegirlprobelms

I absolutely love this! Craig and I often do cheap dates; frozen yogurt and a walk, jogs with Toby, just simple browsing in stores we can't afford. It's always great :)

It's not even specific to date night, but Rob and I text each other during the day to say I love you, to flirt, to joke around, etc. It makes me feel like we're still the teenagers who were falling in love and gets us out of being two old shoes all the time. :)

I love this! I love our date nights. It doesn't matter at all to me what we do as long as we're together. But I agree, date nights do not have to be expensive at all :)
